Bernardo Faria (BF) is a physician-scientist specializing in nephrology and immunology, with a strong focus on chronic kidney disease (CKD), dialysis-related complications, and the complement system. He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Porto (2005) and a Doctorate in Medicine from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (2021). Currently, he is an Investigator at FMUP/RISE-Health, Portugal, where he leads research in biomarker discovery, immunopathology, and translational nephrology. His scientific contributions include pioneering research on complement activation in CKD and dialysis, with a particular emphasis on soluble CD59 as a biomarker for peritoneal membrane function. His work has also demonstrated the role of intravenous iron formulations in complement activation, influencing treatment approaches in nephrology. Additionally, his studies on C4d and CD3 immunostaining in IgA nephropathy have contributed to new risk stratification tools. BF has published several peer-reviewed articles in leading journals, including the Journal of Nephrology, Frontiers in Immunology, Clinical & Experimental Immunology, and the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. He has participated in several national and international research projects, funded by FCT and international grants, and was awarded the ERA-EDTA Research Fellowship (2013). His research aims to develop new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for CKD progression, with an emphasis on precision medicine and complement-targeted therapies. His work bridges fundamental immunology and clinical nephrology, advancing personalized approaches to CKD treatment.
