Andreia Pereira is an Auxiliary researcher at the Instituto Dom Luiz of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the School of Biology of the University of St. Andrews (2014/2018). Her research uses a multidisciplinary approach based on different fields, including geophysics, oceanography, statistics, and biology to uncover new insights about marine life. She has pioneered the use of passive acoustic datasets acquired by ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) to understand baleen whales' occurrence, density, and movements. This innovative approach has seen her contribute to multiple national and international projects, exploring cutting-edge technologies and methods for monitoring wildlife populations and the marine environment. She is currently involved in two international research projects, funded by the US Navy, to showcase the use of OBS data to obtain spatial data of fin whales (N00014-21-1-2564) and to estimate their density (N39430-21-C-2208). Beyond scientific research she has worked as an external collaborator of the Direção-Geral dos Recursos Naturais, Segurança e Serviços Marítimos, Portugal (DGRM), making significant contributions to the EU project CetAMBICion (DG ENV / MSFD 2020) and providing advice during urgent matters such as the killer whale incidents and the monitoring of underwater noise. As a result of her contribution to the monitoring of underwater noise, she is currently a national delegate in the Intersessional Correspondence Group on Underwater Noise of OSPAR (OSPAR ICG-Noise). She also works as a certified cetacean observer in maritime-touristic operators (FOR-MAR-23M1355201) and as a freelance researcher in the dolphin-watching company Lisbon Dolphins. This role allows her to directly engage with the community, fostering a deeper understanding of the critical importance of marine conservation. She has previously co-supervised 2 Bsc students and is currently supervising an MSc student to study the impact of low-frequency underwater noise on baleen whale communication. Her scientific output is dedicated to the study of baleen whales using OBS data and photo-ID of small cetaceans, with a strong publication record on the topic (including numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and national and international presentations) and contribution to relevant bodies for cetacean conservation.
