Sofia Abreu Mendes

Sofia Mendes is an academic and researcher who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Education and Development from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Porto. With over a decade of professional experience in school psychology, she has made significant contributions to the organization and functioning of psychology and guidance services. Her research is deeply rooted in the professional practice of school psychology, a subject she has extensively explored in both her scholarly publications and teaching. Currently, Sofia Mendes serves as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Psychology and Education Sciences at Lusíada University of Porto, where she teaches and mentors future psychologists. She also holds the position of Scientific Coordinator and Professor in the Specialization in School and Educational Psychology at Instituto CRIAP. Her expertise is further recognized through her involvement with the Portuguese Psychologists' Association - OPP, where she is President of the Board of Specialties in Educational Psychology. Additionally, she contributes to the OPP's professional development program "Valoriza-me" as an author and trainer for the course "School Consultation: Foundations for Professional Practice." Sofia Mendes' recent work addresses critical topics such as literacy development, social-emotional learning, and interventions for struggling readers. She is actively involved in international projects, including the International School Climate Collaborative and the Teacher Well-Being Global Project Following the COVID-19 Pandemic, further expanding her research interests. Between 2012 and 2015, Sofia Mendes was awarded scholarships by FCT and FLAD, which supported her doctoral studies at internationally renowned institutions such as the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and Texas State University. These experiences have deeply influenced her research and teaching, allowing her to integrate global perspectives into her work. Her teaching and research philosophy is centered on bridging the gap between theory, practice and policy, ensuring that her academic contributions have a meaningful impact on the field of psychology and education.
