Matthew Holt is the ERA Chair Holder for Neural Cell Biology (NCBio) and vice director of the Neurobiology and Neurologic Disorders integrative program at i3S, University of Porto. He is also head of the NCBio academic-industrial hub for northern Portugal. Dr. Holt holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (2002); a post-doc from the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (2011) and established his own research group at KU Leuven in 2012. In 2022, Dr. Holt was appointed NCBio ERA Chair Holder at i3S. He has 20 years of scientific experience, particularly in the field of biochemistry (transcriptomics and proteomics) and cell biology. His work has been published in 59 peer-reviewed papers (H index = 35, >8500 citations; Google Scholar), often in high impact factor journals, including Cell, Nature Neuroscience and Nature Immunology. He has written 2 book chapters. His research aims to understand how astrocytes contribute to synapse formation and function. Work from Dr. Holt’s lab (amongst others) has been instrumental in establishing astrocytes as a highly molecularly heterogeneous cell type with implications for local circuit function, which he is currently following up using a range of technologies from advanced proteomics through to electrophysiology. Dr. Holt has attracted > €5M in 18 projects as Principal Investigator and > €11M in 15 projects as co-PI. He supervised/has supervised 10 Ph.D. candidates; 11 M.Sc. students; 7 B.Sc. students and has been an opponent in 31 Ph.D. thesis committees. He has given 50 invited talks at international conferences and has been awarded several prizes, including the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant (2011) and the ERC Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Grant (2015). Dr. Holt has established an international reputation reflected by his election to the editorial board of the journal Glia, which is the main specialist journal in his field. In addition, he is a regular reviewer for high-impact, prestigious journals including (but not limited to): Cell, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, EMBO Journal, EMBO Molecular Medicine. His expertise is also sought as a regular reviewer for grant agencies including the ERC, and as an evaluator of scientific departments/institutes (such as Collège de France). Dr. Holt is co-founder of Aila Biotech, a spin-off company based on the considerable success of AAV-delivered IL2 in ameliorating traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke and multiple sclerosis, which was published in Nature Immunology (Yshii et al, 2022). As a founder member, Dr. Holt has a place on the board of directors and acts as a science advisor. He also serves as scientific advisor to Verge Genomics, Janssen Pharma, Sirion Biotech and is inventor of 3 patents.
