Marta is graduated in Nutritional Sciences from the Faculty of Nutritional and Food Sciences, University of Porto since 2007. In 2014 she completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (metabolic diseases) as a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and Queen Mary University of London, UK, having focused her research in the metabolic pathways associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, in pre-clinical models of metabolic disease. Her PhD project was undertaken at the Blizard Institute, in London. From there, she moved to New Zealand to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, where she conducted the New Zealand arm of a large international clinical trial in the field of diabetes prevention, in a high risk population (obesity and hyperglycaemia). During that period, she was also involved in other scientific projects, mainly around (i) intestinal microbiota, (ii) metabolomics as a nutritional assessment method and (iii) glycaemic index. In parallel, Marta was also a lecturer in the same institution (between 2014 and 2018), teaching curricular units in the fields of nutrition, metabolism and biochemistry. Nowadays, and since 2018, Marta is a guest assistant professor and researcher at the NOVA Medical School, having several ongoing pre-clinical and clinical research projects. In parallel, she conducts clinical activity as a registered nutritionist (in diabetes, metabolism and obstetrics) in the CUF Tejo and CUF Descobertas Hospitals. She has received project funding from international funding bodies, such as Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) and the New Zealand Health and Research Council. She won several scientific and travel awards and is the author of over 40 publications in indexed journals. She has been invited to present her work in several scientific events, nationally (Portugal and New Zealand) and internationally.
