João Ascenso is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico and a member of the Multimedia Signal Processing Group at Instituto de Telecomunicações, Lisbon, Portugal. He earned his E.E., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1999, 2003, and 2010, respectively. He coordinates IT’s participation in national and international research projects focused on coding, processing, and analyzing visual data. João currently chairs the JPEG CPM (Coding and Performance for Machines) subgroup and the JPEG AI ad-hoc group, which focus on developing event-based and learning-based image solutions. He has published over 150 papers in international conferences and journals, with more than 5,000 citations (h-index of 33). He has served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and as guest editor for IEEE Access and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. An elected member of the IEEE Visual Signal Processing and Communication and IEEE Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committees, João has also been the Technical Program Chair for PCS2022 and EUVIP2022. He holds roles on the organizing committees of prominent conferences such as IEEE ICIP 2023, IEEE ICME 2020, and IEEE MMSP 2020, and has served as area chair and technical program committee member for several leading multimedia signal processing conferences. João has received three Best Paper Awards: at the 31st Picture Coding Symposium (2015), IEEE ICME 2020, and IEEE MMSP 2020. He has also been honored with the “Excellent Professor” award from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Instituto Superior Técnico multiple times. His current research interests include visual coding, quality assessment, 3D visual representation processing, coding for machines, super-resolution, and denoising.
