João Ricardo De Sá Chambel is a researcher and Civil Engineer who graduated from FEUP. He developed a master's thesis project on the topic of Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations. After graduating, he continued as a research fellow first at the IHRH - Hydraulics and Water Resources Institute, where he had the opportunity to participate in the study "Estudo do Desvio do Rio de Vila e Obras Acessórias associadas à Construção da Estação de Metro da Praça da Liberdade, no Porto" to the Portuguese company Metro do Porto. Then he ingressed as a research fellow in the project ORACLE - Offshore Risk Analysis for Climate Change and Lifetime Extension of offshore foundations (POCI - 01 - 0145 - FEDER - 032170), where he developed his work on offshore foundations, risk and reliability analysis, scour phenomena, sea climate changes, and erosion phenomena. In the last quarter of 2020, he started as a Civil Engineer in one of the most respected Portuguese hydraulic design companies, Noraqua, while still maintaining research cooperation with his previous research team at IHRH and FEUP. He is the co-author of scientific peer-reviewed publications in international journals where he was privileged to work, publish and learn from recognised authors and known engineers in his field, namely with Francisco Taveira Pinto (FEUP), Tiago Ferradosa (FEUP), Pedro Lomónaco (Oregon State University), Paulo Santos (FEUP), e Mario Welzel (TU Braunschweig). One of his publications as a co-author, "Probabilistic Comparison of Static and Dynamic Failure Criteria of Scour Protections" (doi:10.3390/jmse7110400) in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, was the 3rd most cited publication in 2019 of this prestigious journal and the publication "Scour Protections for Offshore Foundations of Marine Energy Harvesting Technologies: A Review" (doi:10.3390/jmse9030297) received the 2022 Best Paper Award from the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. Throughout his scientific activities, João Chambel had the privilege to be part of the scientific and organising committee of the 2nd International Offshore Structures Design Course - edition of 2019. He acts as a peer-reviewer in Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Maritime Engineering (1751-7737). He tutored, as a monitor, in the curricular unit Projeto FEUP at the University of Porto and he is an integrated research member of CIIMAR at the Marine Energy Group, where he performs research within the sub-unit "Offshore Structures and Foundations". In 2021 he received a Ph.D. grant from the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), with the reference 2021.07393.BD, with the project title "Optimised Scour Protections for Marine Renewable Energy Hybrid Structures" in FEUP in partnership with OSU (US). He also participated in several works of the IHRH in partnership with the Portuguese company Porto de Leixões (APDL) such as "Estudo em Modelo Físico de um Sistema de Quebramares Destacados para a Melhoria das Condições na Praia do Carneiro" and "Estudo de Caracterização de Riscos e Programa de Intervenção para a Proteção da Restinga de Ofir e Barra do Cávado". His interests are extended to Offshore Structures and Foundations, Marine Renewable Energy, Scour and Scour Protections, Hydraulics, Ports, and Coastal Erosion.
