Akhilesh Rai has completed Bachelor's (B.Sc.) in Chemistry and Botany, Chemistry from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, Master's (M.Sc.) in Biotechnology from Savitribai Phule Pune University and PhD in Biotechnology from Savitribai Phule Pune University. After completing his PhD, he moved to Nottingham Trent University, U.K. to pursue postdoctoral research on European Union FP7 project. In 2010, he moved to Universite Catholique Louvain as a postdoctoral researcher for 1 year. In 2012, he joined as FCT postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, Coimbra, Portugal. He was an assistant investigator at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology from 2013 to 2017 in the project led by Dr. Lino Ferreira. He was awarded the FCT Investigator grant and joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra to start his independent group in November 2017. Notably, his team received the first prize at the first phase of the 7th Building Global Innovators (BGI-MIT Program) for the project related to developing a unique wound dressing for treating chronic wounds, which led to the generation of the spinoff company (CureMat Technology). Our work related to antimicrobial nanoparticles has been recognized and I have been conferred the prestigious Bluepharma-University of Coimbra Innovation award (2016) for the project Bug-killer. He has published more than 36 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 5 book chapters, 1 patent granted (2 patents submitted at PCT level) with citations of more than 7000 and h-index-21. he has edited one book for the Elsevier group and currently editing another book for Springer Nature. He is also an active reviewer of many international journals related to nanotechnology, biodegradable NPs, antimicrobial materials, drug delivery, and antimicrobial surfaces. He supervised 2 PhD students and 8 master students for their theses. Currently, his group has two master's, two PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher. He has actively participated in several international conferences. He is guest editor of the special issues of Nanomaterials and (MDPI publishers) and Frontiers in Nanotechnology, and an associate editor of Frontiers of Medical Engineering. His research interests include the formulation of bioactive and peptide-conjugated nanomaterials and multifunctional coatings in treating oral infections and for regenerative medicine applications. His research group is also involved in the development of light-sensitive nanoparticles for brain targeting and understanding the paracrine effects on the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. His research group is also involved in the development of antimicrobial and bioactive coating on medical devices and implants. Recently, he is granted an FCT project to develop multifunctional dental implants for the treatment of peri-implant diseases. He is a team member of BioRobotbeads and Reset_Bone_Ageing projects funded by the regional fund (Centro2020 Portugal).

  1. High-density antimicrobial peptide coating with broad activity and low cytotoxicity against human cells. Medical device-associated infections are a multi-billion dollar burden for the worldwide healthcare systems. The modification of medical devices with non-leaching coatings capable of killing microorganisms on contact is one of the strategies being investigated to prevent microorganism colonization. Here we developed a robust antimicrobial coating based on the chemical immobilization of the antimic. 2016.
