Giulia Di Lorenzo is an Italian agricultural biotechnologist with a strong academic background and practical experience in plant pathology, molecular biology, and sustainable agriculture. She holds a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Biotechnologies from the University of Pisa, Italy (2024), where she graduated with distinction (110 cum laude/110). Her thesis focused on sustainable crop protection through the development of chitosan-biochar microcapsules containing wood distillate, aimed at mitigating the impact of Macrophomina phaseolina, a relevant soil-borne pathogen. Her academic training has been multidisciplinary and research-intensive, covering areas such as microbial and genetic biotechnologies, plant physiology, mycology, plant pathology, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and agricultural ecotoxicology. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Turin (2020). Giulia has actively participated in competitive research environments in Italy and Portugal, namely in the research project CercoGB - Cercospora leaf spot disease (“CLSD”) in cowpea in Guinea-Bissau. Through an Erasmus+ Traineeship and ongoing internships at the Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro (Instituto Superior de Agronomia/ULisboa), she contributed to projects addressing Hemileia vastatrix (coffee leaf rust), a pathogen of economic relevance worldwide. Her research involves cytological analysis, gene expression studies (qPCR), and pathogen virulence profiling. She is currently a technical assistant and intern at CIFC/ISA, where she supports molecular and plant pathology research. Giulia is also mentoring final year students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Biology in the scope of the curricular unit “Project in Biology”, demonstrating the scientific maturity and collaborative skills essential for academic environments. Her scientific contributions include an article in Sustainability (2025), focused on biocompatible formulations for precision agriculture. She has also participated in scientific dissemination activities and has been awarded a graduation medal for academic excellence by the University of Pisa. Giulia is proficient in a range of laboratory and data analysis techniques (e.g., PCR/qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, microscopy, R, BioEdit, DNASTAR Navigator, gel electrophoresis, cloning using the pGEM-T Easy Vector System, bacterial and fungal culture). She is fluent in English and Italian and has additional knowledge of Portuguese, French, and Spanish. Her international experience, multidisciplinary training, and commitment to sustainable agriculture and plant protection align strongly with national and EU research priorities.
