I am full professor (Professor Catedrático) at the University of Coimbra. I am interested in understanding the general ecology of streams. I am particularly interested in litter decomposition and brown food webs (litter as the energy source for communities). I am also interested in developing, improving and applying tools to assess environmental quality and the effect of pollutants in receiving system, particularly mining effects in freshwaters. Summary of my CV: (a) Science Management: Member of the direction board (extended) of the Iberian Limnological Society (AIL) and the Iberian Ecological Society (SIBECOL) (b) Teaching: "Population and Community Ecology" for undergraduates at the University of Coimbra and "Scientific Writing"¿ at the University of Coimbra and Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) for post-graduates) (c) My research has been funded mainly by the Portuguese Science Fundation (9 projects as PI, 4 as collaborator) European Union (1 as PI, 2 as national PI). Total funds secured (only as PI and national PI of International projects) ~820 000 euros. I have also been involved in Research projects in Brazil (4 projects). (d) I have been supporting environmental agencies (CCDR Centro, CCDR Alentejo, INAG) and Industry (EDIA, SOMINCOR) in their environmental monitoring programs: ~950 000 euros secured. (e) Editorial positions: Associated Editor of Freshwater Science (2008 - 2020) and Editorial board member of the International Review of Hydrobiology (since 2009), Limnetica (since 2001) and Biologia Acuatica (since 2015). (f) I organized 2 international conferences, The XIX Congress of the Iberian Association of Limnology (2018) and the 5th. International meeting on Plant Litter Processing in Freshwaters (2008) and I was member of the scientific committee in 17 international conferences. (g) I organized 22 international advanced courses for Ph.Ds. and young scientists (h) I hosted 15 pot-doctoral researched from 9 countries, supervised 15 Ph.D. studentes (10 as co-adviser), 22 master students (5 as co-adviser) and main opponent in 52 Ph.D. defenses (33 abroad) (i) I published 147 papers in international journals, 23 book chapters, and 3 books (1 as author and 2 as editor). I Presented 10 plenary conference and > 200 papers / oral presentations in conferences and other events.
