Sara Magno holds a Ph.D. in Culture Studies from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, completed in cotutelle with the University of Copenhagen, and supported by a prestigious FCT international scholarship. Her doctoral research centered on documentary filmmaking within the field of contemporary art and focussed on the critical intersection between art and politics. Through her work, she examined the concepts of documentality and paraesthetics in the practices of artists and filmmakers such as Salomé Lamas, Jeremy Shaw, Louis Henderson, Trinh T. Minh-ha, and Hito Steyerl. She also holds a Master's degree in Communication and Art from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, where her thesis focused on the refiguration of archives in the cinematic works of Harun Farocki, Hito Steyerl and Filipa César. Her academic background includes specialized studies in Photography and Video Art at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie for Arts and Design in Amsterdam and participation in the Maumaus Independent Study Program under the direction of Jurgen Bock, also in Lisbon. Sara has extensive experience collaborating with leading arts and cultural institutions in Lisbon, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), the Museum of the Portuguese Communications Foundation (FPC), Hangar: Artistic Research Center, and Quadrado Azul Contemporary Art Gallery. She served as co-editor of Diffractions, a peer-reviewed graduate journal in Culture Studies associated with CECC, the Research Center for Communication and Culture at UCP. Her expertise extends to publishing, with regular contributions to journals and platforms on contemporary art such as Contemporânea and ArteCapital. Currently, she serves as the outreach officer for Transform4Europe, an alliance of European universities that addresses key sustainability challenges in the EU, including climate change, inclusivity, and digitalization. Her interdisciplinary expertise and professional experience position her as a dynamic contributor to the fields of contemporary art, academia, and international collaboration.
