Emily Hallinan holds a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge (2010) and a Masters degree from the University of Cape Town (2013). She obtained her PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cambridge in 2018, and has been a postdoctoral researcher at ICArEHB, University of Algarve, since 2020. Her principal research interests are Middle Stone Age lithic technology and landscape use, specifically hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments. Her field research has focused on surface lithic assemblages in South Africa, recently expanding her studies to Egypt, Oman and Kenya. Her postdoctoral work has developed a novel 3D geometric morphometric approach to lithic artefacts with the aim of testing scenarios of the dispersal, diffusion or convergent development of Nubian Levallois technology in Africa and southwest Asia. Her scientific contributions include 15 peer-reviewed articles, as first or corresponding author on 12 of these, and she has presented 21 invited seminars and conference contributions. She is also active in public outreach, especially in Africa where she collaborates with the non-profit organisation Children’s Book Network and has co-authored a children’s book on archaeology.
