Course / Discipline taught

Academic session Degree Subject (Type) Institution / Organization
2011 - Current I developed a system to train PhD students in the process of peer-reviewing of manuscripts for journals, and thus improve their critical thinking. This course original ran in 2012/13 & 2013/14, (7 hrs/month) at the U. of East Anglia as drop in session and participating students attained Credit Units (1 per 3 sessions) towards the completion of their PhD degree. Since 2015 I run these session with PhD students in my group at the Uni. Aveiro. (Doutoramento) University of East Anglia, United Kingdom

Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal
2019/02 - 2019/06 I have created this course with the aim of developing active learning and critical thinking at the postgrad level. It is composed by three modules: a) Short exposition: of general background (by the lecturer) and applied concepts (by an invited Urban Planner working at a local municipality); b) Tutorial self-learning: student presentation of specific topics followed by general discussion with the class; c) Applied coursework: group coursework focusing on scientific publications, summarizing novel finding -outputs can be published in on-line database Urban Ecology (Mestrado) Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal
2019/02 - 2019/06 In this voluntary curricular unit I offer undergrad students (thus mostly originating from Ornithology) a truly “hands-on” experience in Ornithological studies. Basic techniques for dietary studies (e.g. micro-histological analysis) or behavioural studies (e.g. intake rates) are first shown and then experienced by students which actively contribute to ongoing studies and are accompanied in the lab by the PhD/Pos-doc in charge of that specific task. Curricular Volunteering in Life Sciences (Licenciatura) Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal
2018/09 - 2019/02 I conceived from scratch, and single handily developed and directed this curricular unit at an undergrad level. Composed of 25 sessions, (12 - 1 hr theoretical and 12 - 2 hr practical + 1 field-day), aimed at providing the students with the fundaments and research tools used in this field of knowledge. The course is heavily permeated with invited lecturers (60% of sessions) from varying levels of expertise (from PhD students to Full Professors) that interactively show the practical aspects of the theoretical backgrounds provided.
