C. Silva is an integreted researcher at the FCT GHTM Research Center at IHMT/UNL. She has a graduation in Thanatological, Cytological and Pathological Anatomy, a Master in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine and a PhD in Pharmacy, Microbiology. During her PhD studies, the main scientific activity relied on studies on Mycobacterium tuberculosis molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and host-pathogen interations. From February 2018 to August 2019, C. Silva has developed activities as Scientific and Medical writer in the Portuguese editorial magazine News Farma (www.newsfarma.pt), specialized in health communications. C. Silva has produced several articles and brochures regarding different medical specialties; she had covered national and international scientific meetings and interviews with experts (e.g. SIDA | jul/ago/18; nº34, pp 32-34; https://www.ias2019.newsfarma.pt/expert-insight/196-fostemsavir-¿resultados-entusiasmantes-no-tratamento-de-doentes-com-infecção-vih-submetidos-a-múltiplas-terapêuticas-prévias¿.html). She had coordinated a special edition of Médico News magazine (https://www.store.newsfarma.pt/medico-news/item/1742-especial-semana-digestiva-2019.html). The activities performed as scientific and medical writer provided her with skills in in-depth knowledge of life sciences and medical subjects and analytical and journalistic skills becoming multifaceted, multi-disciplinary, multitasking, self-starter and self-motivator, qualities that are required in a changeable and competitive environment. In the meanwhile, she gains new interest about other emergent diseases and other pathogens of Public Health concern, such as Gram-negative bacteria. In October 2019, C. Silva joined the Unit of Medical Microbiology, IHMT/UNL, involved in an FCT funded project (PTDC/BIA-MIC/30692/2017) at IHMT/NOVA, where she contributed for the studying of antimicrobial drug resistance mechanisms for the development of new drugs against Gram-negative bacteria, e.g. E. coli, Acinetobacter baumannii and K. pneumoniae. Besides, she has been involved in activities such as laboratory supervision of master students, and jury of academic proofs as well. Due to her experience in scientific communication area, C. Silva was invited to collaborate with the IHMT Communication Office in November 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic she joint the Scientific Communication task force of IHMT, where she contributed to the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge towards Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP), and also the publication of an e-Book (http://ihmtweb.ihmt.unl.pt/download/Comunicacao/E-BOOK_Online.pdf). C. Silva is author/co-author of 15 scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals with three additional articles under preparation for submission. C. Silva has over 40 communications in scientific meetings, with a Scopus h-index of 8. She is ad-hoc reviewer for scientific journals (https://publons.com/researcher/3424947/carla-silva/), with a total of 10 reviewed papers since February 2020. Currently, she work’s as Science Manager at Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) Research Center at IHMT-NOVA. Her rule is to support the GHTM community in attracting competitive national and international funding for research by facilitating the processes of preparing and submitting applications, ensuring compliance with regulations and alignment of applications with the objectives of the competition. She is also responsible for publicizing funding opportunities through internal newsletters presented by thematic areas of research, as well as identifying more specific opportunities aimed at target researchers. From time to time, the GHTM organizes information/clarification sessions (GHTM Sessions) within the scope of competitions of greater institutional importance.

  1. Tuberculosis across the seas: CPLP-TB - a joint effort in cataloguing mycobacterium tuberculosis genetic diversity in the lusophone space. The Community of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries (CPLP) comprises nine countries across four continents, accounting for 7.2% of the world¿s land area, and where tuberculosis (TB) is still a cause of public health concern. A marked variation in TB incidence (23 to 551 cases per 100 000 habitants) can be observed across the different member-states and, despite of this, a considerable gap in t. 2017.
