Manuel Souto Salom (Valencia, 1988) is Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Aveiro and CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials since 2019. He holds a double degree in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the University of Valencia (Spain) and from the École de Chimie, Polymères et Matériaux (ECPM) de Strasbourg (France), respectively. He also obtained a Master in Molecular and Supramolecular Chemistry from the University of Strasbourg performing his Master thesis at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, Lisbon). In 2012, he started a PhD in Materials Science (triple award winning thesis) at Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) under the supervision of Prof. J. Veciana developing new organic radical dyads for different applications in electronics (molecular switches, conductors and rectifiers) conducting two research stays at the National University of Singapore (NUS, C. Nijhuis group) and at the University of Antwerp. In 2017, after obtaining his PhD, he started to work as postdoctoral researcher (Juan de la Cierva fellowship) at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol-Universidad de Valencia) on new electroactive Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for catalytic applications and as electrochemical sensors. His main current research interest is the design and synthesis of new functional electroactive porous frameworks (MOFs & COFs) based on redox-active building blocks for different applications in electronics. He's first author and/or corresponding author on 21 of 35 scientific articles in high-impact journals (h-index = 18, citations = 789). He has contributed to 30 national and international conferences (10 invited lectures). In 2021, he was awarded an ERC-StG with the project ELECTROCOFS. He has also received the European Award on Molecular Magnetism Doctoral Thesis (ADocMolMag 2020), the PhD Extraordinary Award 2016 (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and the first runner-up NanoMatMol PhD Award 2016 (Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) & Spanish Royal Society of Physicis (RSEF)), and selected as Rising Star at Pre-Conference International Conference on Molecule-Based Magnets (ICMM). His fields of expertise are organic and inorganic chemistry, materials science and molecular materials with large experience synthesizing and characterizing different electroactive organic molecular materials exhibiting multiple properties (optical, magnetic and electrical) in solution and solid state. In addition, he has been preparing and characterizing Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) of some electroactive molecules being used as molecular rectifiers. He has also large experience synthesizing and characterizing electroactive Metal-Organic Frameworks. He has experience supervising 1 postdoctoral researcher, 4 PhD students (2020-Present), 2 young researchers (BI), 4 Master theses in Chemistry (one marked with honours), and 6 final year projects in Chemistry. He has been teaching Physical Chemistry and General Chemistry Laboratories at different universities (Aveiro, Valencia and Barcelona). Reviewer in J. Am. Chem. Soc., Coord. Chem., Acc. Chem. Res., Rev., Chem.Sci., Chem. Comm., CrystEngComm, etc. He has participated and organized different outreach activities for children and general public. He's regular contributor to The Huffington Post, Principia and The Conversation blogs. He's also coordinator of Ciencia en el Parlamento (First meeting between scientists and politicians at the Spanish Parliament (2018) to promote the scientific assessment in Spain). He's member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Spanish Royal Society of Chemsitry (RSEQ) and Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ).
