Klênio Jonessy de Medeiros Barros

Klênio Barros holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Aveiro (UA), with a competitive scholarship from CAPES (Brazil). He holds a Master's degree in Music from UA and in Music Education in Primary Education from the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ESE-IPP). He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Music at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN, Brazil), specialising in Interpretive Practices of the 20th and 21st Centuries. He is a researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) and the Centre for Research in Music Psychology and Music Education (CIPEM), both nationally and internationally recognised institutions. In Brazil, he collaborates with the Ethnomusicology Laboratory of the Federal University of Pará (LABETNO) and is a member of the scientific committee of the Amazonian Congresses and Colloquiums of Ethnomusicology, reinforcing his involvement in international networks. His academic career combines Music Education and Ethnomusicology, with teaching experience in higher education at UFRN (2010–2012) and in primary and secondary education in Portugal, combining research, pedagogy and musical creation. He was a research fellow at CIPEM and is part of the editorial team of the journal Music, Psychology and Education (INET-md | CIPEM). His scientific production focuses on Music Education, Ethnomusicology, popular music and performance practices, with publications and presentations at national and international events. His participation in SIMM-posium #10 (Brussels) highlights his recognition in the European debate on music, education and social impact. He is co-author of the book Pedagogical Sonorities and a member of the research group ‘Education, Music and Theatre in the Community’ (INET-md | CIPEM). He develops Music Education and social intervention projects with vulnerable communities, integrating collaborative music practices, participatory artistic activities and academic knowledge, aiming for direct, sustainable and ethical social impact. In 2025, he received funding from the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) for the project "Sounds with a Taste of Home", with communities of immigrant and refugee musicians in Portugal, consolidating a profile of excellence oriented towards inclusion, intercultural dialogue and social transformation.
