I have been focused on the development of new cell models to study cancer. With these models I’ve tried to overcome the current pitfalls in cancer research and on the drug development cascade, such as, the lack of tumour architecture, tumour-stromal crosstalk and of disease progression events. I’ve worked on the development and implementation of long-term in vitro and patient-derived ex vivo models, from oestrogen receptor positive breast cancers. Currently I am working on the implementation and characterization of Zebrafish patient-derived xenografts (zAvatars) of colorectal and ovarian cancer, to be used as a predictive screening tool for personalized evaluation of therapeutic sensitivity. In parallel, I have been working on a new ex vivo model for breast, colorectal and ovarian cancer, to be used as a complementary tool to zPDXs. In the next years, my main goal is to continue to work towards more realistic personalized medicine approaches, to directly contribute to patient survival and wellbeing.
