Frederico Lopes holds a degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Educational Sciences, and a PhD in Human Kinetics. He is an Invited Assistant Professor at Ispa – University Institute, where he lectures within the fields of Play and Education. He has also served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon. His main areas of professional practice, intervention, and research include play, mobility, space, and children’s participation. His work focuses on the interdisciplinary dimensions underpinning the field of childhood, encompassing motor development, environmental psychology, the sociology and geography of childhood, urban planning, architecture, spatial policies, and education. He works as a trainer in awareness-raising and participatory workshops on play, play provision, play supervision, spatial design, and children’s development and well-being. He also acts as a consultant for various institutions and organisations in the creation of play spaces that promote well-being in school and public environments, as well as in participatory design and landscape projects of outdoor play and learning environments. He was a co-founder, and is a board member, and Playworker of the association “1,2,3, Macaquinho do Xinês”, whose mission is to support and promote spaces and opportunities for children to play freely in the diverse contexts of their daily lives. He is also part of Brincapé, a consortium formed with the Portuguese Association of Child Safety (APSI), which has carried out interventions in different neighbourhoods and historical areas of Lisbon, aiming to create new opportunities for children to play outdoors and to occupy public space with greater autonomy. He is the founding member and President of the Portuguese Association for the Right to Play (IPA Portugal), the Portuguese representative of the International Play Association (IPA), and a member of its International Council.
