Maria Arménia Abreu Fonseca de Carvalho Teixeira Carrondo is Full Professor (retired since 2018) at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Universidade Nova de Lisboa where she coordinates the Macromolecular Crystallography Unit and is leader of the Structural Genomics laboratory. She was President of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia between April 2015 and January 2016, vice-Rector of the Unversidade Nova de Lisboa between 2007 and 2013 and vice-Director of ITQB between 1996 and 2005. Academic career: M.A. Carrondo started her academic career at the University of Porto, Portugal, where she graduated in chemical engineering in 1971. Between 1972 and 1975 she was Teaching Assistant at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL). From 1975 to 1978 she worked for her PhD at Imperial College in Chemical Crystallography, University of London, where she continued for one further year as post-doc. From 1979 she was Associate Professor at IST - UTL. In 1989 she obtained her Habilitation at UTL. She joined the newly created Instituto de Tecnologia e Biológica in 1988 where she created the research group in Protein Crystallography that led to the current Macromolecular Crystallography Unit. This Unit is now composed of five independent laboratories (http://mx.itqb.unl.pt/). She is the leader of the Structural Genomics Laboratory where studies of proteins involved in diverse biological processes, such as DNA repair and protection, oxidative stress resistance and hydrogen sulfide metabolism are conducted. The lab combines structural biology methodologies like X-ray crystallography and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), with X-ray imaging, biochemical, biophysical and spectroscopic analysis. The Laboratory is composed of three research teams. Awards: M.A. Carrondo was elected EMBO member in 2000, received the European Medal for Bio-Inorganic Chemistry in 2004 and was awarded the “Estímulo à Excelência” from the Ministério da Ciência, Inovação e Ensino Superior in 2004. Scientific positions and Meeting organization: M.A. Carrondo is presently coordinator of the Portuguese participation as an Affiliate Centre in the EU Infrastructure Instruct-ERIC and is the Portuguese representative at the Instruct Council. She participated in several review Panels and Committees and organized many courses in Portugal and abroad. She was an active member in several Scientific Organizations ( i.e. Science Advisory Committee of ESRF) and international (EU ERC, Academy of Finland, several European synchrotrons) and national (FCT) evaluation boards. She was involved in the organization of several International Scientific Meetings, such as Chair of the Organizing Committee of ECM 17, Lisbon, 1997, Co-Director of the Erice School in 2010, and Organizer of the BioCrys courses on “Fundamentals of modern methods in Biocrystallography”, Oeiras, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 and was member of the ECM Committee for the Max-Perutz Prize (2006, 2007 and 2013). Since 1979 she published 191 papers in internationally reviewed journals and supervised and co-supervised 13 PhD students and 14 post-docs. She is currently co-supervisor of 2 PhD students. She was PI and participant in several international and national projects.
