Adelaide Fernandes received her degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2002. She performs neuroscience research since 2002. Her PhD studies focused on glia reactivity during neonatal development were performed at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (FFULisboa), having received her PhD in 2006, from the University of Lisbon. From 2006 to 2010 she developed post-doctoral studies focused on changed on neuronal development and myelination during early postnatal conditions, at Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.Ulisboa) and Department of Neuroscience, University of Minneapolis. She is Assistant Professor at FFUlisboa since 2011. Adelaide research focuses on neuron-glial interplay during neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative disorders. Adelaide explored the impact of neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. jaundice, sepsis) on astrogliosis, neurodegeneration and recently on oligodendrogenesis and myelination. Presently, Adelaide focus on neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative disorders, as Multiple Sclerosis and in ageing associated Alzheimer’s disease, namely in inflammatory cross-talk between neurons and glial cells with a particular interest in microglia phenotype, using organotypic cultures, 3D cellular systems derived from induced Pluripotent Stem Cells or animal models of degenerative disorders. Her work granted her a Medal of Honour L’Óreal for Women in Science – L’Óreal/UNESCO/FCT in 2011, an Innovation Research Grant from Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society in 2013, a National-FCT funded project and a Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation by Merck-Serono in 2017, in parallel with funding from other research projects and procurement agreements.
