A parallel event to the Arquivo Vivo exhibition, this conversation reflects on the
role of personal archives in the production of historical knowledge and artistic practice.
Bringing together researchers, archivists, and artists working with archives related
to Portugal’s colonial past and the liberation struggles of former African colonies,
the event invites discussion of the challenges and possibilities of preserving, interpreting,

This exhibition draws on the personal archive of Angolan intellectual and politician
Mário Pinto de Andrade, exploring it as a space of memory, imagination, and artistic
creation. Three Angolan artists, Lino Damião, Raquel Lima, and João Ana, were invited
to create new works inspired by archival documents, transforming traces of the past
into contemporary artistic expressions and inviting audiences to see the archive as
