L. Baptista is a marine biologist and geneticist whose research focuses on biogeography of marine invertebrates, by combining more traditional taxonomic studies with the latest advances in population genetics. She obtained her PhD in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution from the University of Porto in 2023, with a project focusing on the genetic structure of marine invertebrates in the Azores Archipelago, developed between CIBIO-InBIO/BIOPOLIS (Portugal) and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU, Vienna, Austria). As a research line, L. Baptista is interested in understanding the mechanisms behind the colonization of newly emerged islands by marine invertebrates with limited dispersal abilities, as well as dispersal routes across important oceanic biogeographical barriers, interpreted in a multidisciplinary framework mainly considering morphology, ecology, and oceanography. Currently, L. Baptista is a post-doctoral researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ, Netherlands), studying the meiofaunal diversity and connectivity of subsurface life at the hydrothermal vent field of the East Pacific Rise (EPR). Bathyal habitats – such as seamounts and hydrothermal vents – reduce the functional distance to remote islands, but their role as stepping-stones, especially during low sea-level stands, is far from well understood. Coupling phylogenomic approaches with geological evolution and (paleo)oceanographical changes, might be key to unravel evolutionary relationships, reconstruct early colonization events and dispersal pathways, as well as to forecast changes on the oceanic biotic dynamics threatened by climate change.
