Maria Luísa Monteiro Franco

Maria Luísa Monteiro Franco (Lisbon, 1988), completed her PhD in Landscape Architecture in 2019 at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), University of Lisbon, where she received a PhD scholarship from the FCT. She has a Master's degree (2011) and a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture (2010) from the ISA. She has been a member of LEAF's "Green and Blue Infrastructures" team since 2013 and has a research career in spatial planning since 2011 in ISA. She worked as a grant holder on the SCAPEFIRE project (PCIF/MOS/0046/2017) - "A Sustainable Spatial Planning Model for the Prevention of Rural Fires", until May 2021, when she started a contract under the Scientific Employment Stimulus Competition (FCT). At the moment she collaborates in the research projects LandGi-Nexus (LEAF project) and MOSAIC - Joined-up land use strategies tackling climate change and biodiversity loss (HORIZON project). She has also taken part in consultancy projects for public organisations such as the General Directorate of Territory, National Tax Authority and Lisbon City Council. She also collaborated on the project "Cartography of Natural and Semi-natural Habitats and Flora in Sites Classified under the Habitats Directive - CART-PG RN2000" (Public Tender no. 5/2018/ICNF/SEDE), as a GIS technician. As a member of a multidisciplinary research team, she works in collaboration with specialists in complementary scientific areas (geology, soil and vegetation), has participated in the organisation of conferences and in the preparation of applications for research projects. Her research and professional interests are the development of Geographic Information Systems, their application to land use planning and the evaluation of land use planning policies. Within the area of Spatial Planning, the following themes stand out: planning of Green Infrastructures in urban and rural areas; landscape planning and recovery in disadvantaged rural areas with a high risk of desertification; spatial planning for the prevention of rural fires.
