Nathanaël Savalle is currently a Postdoctoral researcher at ISISE, UMinho and works in the ERC-AdG project Stand4Heritage. He obtained his Civil Engineer (Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France) and Research Master (University of Lyon, France) degrees in 2016. During this period, he acquired a solid scientific background in fluid and solid mechanics, physics, mathematics, chemistry, electronics, control engineering, with a specialisation in Civil Engineering. Nathanaël defended his PhD three years after in 2019, at the University of Lyon with the title: "Seismic behaviour of slope dry stone retaining walls". Throughout the thesis, Nathanaël developed strong skills in experimental testing (DIC systems, tilting tests and shaking table tests), analytical modelling (Limit Analysis, Pseudo-static approach) and numerical modelling (Discrete Element Method). The thesis project aimed to provide recommendations for the seismic design of dry stone retaining walls. For this purpose, he developed an analytical tool based on the pseudo-static approach, which allows a fast computational time. Dynamic experiments and simulations then helped to identify an appropriate behaviour factor for dry-joint masonry retaining structures that can weigh the analytical predictions. Finally, general recommendations have been deduced for the seismic design of dry stone retaining walls following the Eurocodes. Some particular case studies for France have also been conducted. Nathanaël also spent five months in Berlin in 2015, where he participated in a research project, SEMA, on the asset management of sewer networks. In particular, he developed methodologies to characterise the uncertainty of the manual sewer inspection results. Similarly, he conducted many experimental characterisation tests of soils (Proctor, Atterberg, VBS) in the framework of ARRCANE project in 2014. His current research interests include: shaking table tests, masonry behaviour, retaining structures, rocking, discrete element modelling, control theories, machine learning, limit analysis, DIC, experimental testing, geometrical design. Nathanaël supervised a scholarly research project with two students (M1 level) and is currently supervising a PhD student. He also served as a lecturer at Ecole Centrale de Lyon, teaching beam theory, soils mechanics and FEM modelling. Despite his young age, he already published five journal articles and has a promising track record (H-index = 2). Finally, his computer skills include software such as MATLAB, UDEC - 3DEC, CATIA, R, ANSYS, Rhinoceros, MS Office, LateX, C#, Inventor, VBA, Python.
