Rafaela Maria da Silva Presa completed the Integrated Master in Bioengineering in 2019 by Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP)/Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS). During the Master degree, Rafaela performed an Internship in the BioEngineered Surfaces group at i3s. Her research work focused on the development of an antimicrobial and antithrombogenic coating for vascular stents application. Later, she performed her MSc thesis in the field of biomaterials for bone cancer treatment under the scope of the 2BBone project supported by FCT. Her master's dissertation, entitled "Development of a novel 3D-Scaffold to Promote Bone regeneration", was developed at Biofabrication Group at i3s and at Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO) - University of Aveiro. Her thesis was focused on the synthesis and additive manufacturing of innovative 3D-scaffolds to promote bone regeneration and concluded with a final grade of 19 out of 20. Pleased with Rafaela's performance during the dissertation period, Dr. Aureliana Sousa hired her for four more months to conduct research activities on the synthesis and functionalization of biomaterials for additive manufacturing and their cellular evaluation. Her work resulted in the co-authored publication of two scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals. Continuing a collaborative work with Biofabrication group, Rafaela is the first author of a submitted book chapter (under revision). Currently, Rafaela is performing her PhD project (with a Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) grant) in Biofabrication Group. The project is focused on the development of mechano-modulatory 3D in vitro model of human skin fibrosis. At the same time, Rafaela is a PhD student in the Molecular and Cellular Biology applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth) doctoral program in ICBAS. Recently, Rafaela was awarded with a Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) Grant within the NETSKINMODELS COST Action. With this grant, Rafaela went to KU Leuven (Belgium), where she learnt how to produce meshes through electrospinning technique. Rafaela participated on the organization of 3 events: the 2nd NETSKINMODELS Meeting - COST Action: CA21108 - European Network for Skin Engineering and Modeling (Porto, 13-15 September 2023) the XI BiotechHealth Symposium Revolutionizing Biotech: expect the unexpected (Porto, 20-21 June 2024) and the workshop "3D Bioprinting for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Engineering" in 19th Young European Scientist Meeting on the 19th September 2024 in Porto. Her multidisciplinary background in bioengineering and biomaterials allowed her to develop strong skills in complementary research areas ranging from materials synthesis and biofabrication to cellular biology. Rafaela has excellent communication skills and experience in presenting scientific data in national and international meetings as demonstrated by the participation in eight international conferences and two poster presentation. She is also able to conduct research and setup research studies while maintaining attention to details and good time management. Rafaela performs research in the area of Medical Biotechnology with emphasis on Biomaterials and Engineering and Technology.
