Andreia Neves-Carvalho graduated in Applied Biology by the University of Minho in 2006. She has been focused on merging fundamental and translational questions. She studies the physiological role of Ataxin-3 (ATXN3) as a path towards a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 (SCA3) and other proteinopathies, and definition of targets for development of effective treatments. During a consolidation period, she worked in the Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics field, using the nematode C. elegans as a model, which became her MSc thesis project on Molecular Genetics. From 2009-2014 she integrated a Health Sciences Doctoral programme and developed her PhD thesis in collaboration with two groups at Vrije University at Amsterdam, led by Prof Ka Wan Li and Prof Peter Heutink. She developed neuronal lines to screen for molecular partners and targets for ATXN3’s deubiquitylating activity, generating a large amount of data by high throughput assays that can be further explored by us and researchers worldwide, as well as important tools for the field such as cellular models (cell lines and primary cultures), molecular characterization of protein function and interactions, and analysis of the ubiquitome, her main contribution to the field, allowed collaborations in projects in diverse fields such as use of MSCs to study neural/glial proliferation and differentiation, and Tau pathology. She has also described a new substrate for ATXN3’s deubiquitylating function in neurons and new role of ATXN3 in splicing regulation, in particular splicing of Tau, which establishes a link between two proteins involved in different neurodegenerative disorders. In parallel, She contributed to the characterization of a SCA3 mouse model as well as to various pre-clinical trials to test the effect of different drugs for SCA3 such as 17-DMAG, Lithium Chloride, Valproic acid, Creatine and Citalopram, contributing for the discovery of new compounds for possible use in SCA3 therapy. She started her post doctoral training in 2015, focused on dissecting the structure-function correlations in the cerebellum in the context of SCA3, to define targets for future therapeutic approaches and identify relevant biomarkers for preclinical trials. More recently, she started performing in vivo freely moving electrophysiological studies in our SCA3 mouse in collaboration with Dr Khodakhah (Albert Einstein College of Medicine), a relatively new technique in Portugal. To date, she has supervised 2 MSc and 2 PhD students in their lab rotations. She received 12 awards and published 14 original articles with accumulated IF = 71.33 (average IF = 5.095).
