After my MSc at the London School of Economics and my PhD at the European University Institute in 2017, I spent two years working as an Overseas Institute Fellow and continuing my research agenda in Guinea-Bissau, where I implemented my first lab-experiment and started my first large-scale randomized controlled trial. In 2019 I got the Spanish accreditation to become Assistant Professor and was hired in this position by the University Loyola, in Seville. In 2020 I joined NOVAFRICA, at the NOVA School of Business and Economics, with an FCT-Universidade Nova de Lisboa contract as a Junior Researcher. In the last 5 years, I produced six research papers. I published three of them in peer-review journals, two are currently published in working papers series and one is under review. These papers show a clear upward trend in the quality and visibility. During these five years, these papers have been presented in top international conferences and economic departments, including CEPR, IFS, BREAD, NBER Organizational Economics, NOVAFRICA Conference, the University of Chicago, NEUDC, the African Meeting of the Econometric Society, PacDev, ECOBAS, Loyola Workshop on Economic Behavior, ASSET and the Spanish Economics Association. I have a strong network of researchers collaborating on my research agenda. My network of ongoing collaborations includes P. Vicente (NOVA SBE, BREAD and CEPR), A. Delfino (Bocconi and LEAP), S. Aman-Rana (University of Virginia), A. Coutts (York University), T. Molina (University of Alicante and IZA), C. Minaudier (affiliations) and G. Schinaia (University of Chicago). Such collaborations, many of them long-term, are very stimulating and enriching. My research has attracted competitive funding and grants close to half a million euros in value, for the implementation of a variety of -mostly ongoing- large randomized controlled trials. I am the main Principal Investigator for most of those grants. Beyond my research production and output, I am always pro-active in the support to research. I organized three international conferences and three national events in Guinea-Bissau and have been a referee for three peer reviewed journals. Beyond academia, I am highly committed with actively promoting the continuation of policy solutions found to be effective through my team’s rigorous scientific impact evaluations. One such example is my active role in leading a partnership between four different institutions to provide a market information system found to increase farmers’ revenue in Guinea-Bissau. This service is in its fourth year of successful operation, has reached over 3,000 subscribers and opened the door to new follow-up research projects. I have authored seven policy publications linking research with policymaking, and I am in regular contact with policy stakeholders interested in my results. My research has appeared in radio (RFI) and blogs (PEDL and IGC). I have also founded and currently direct the Bissau Economics Lab (BELAB), a policy-research center with the main objective of creating local capacity for the implementation of surveys, economic studies and randomized controlled trials. BELAB is a member of the prestigious association of Think tanks Southern Voice and National Partner for the Afrobarometer. As a prove of my expertise in the region, last year I was invited to Dakar among 50 specialists in West Africa to inform the United Nations Development Report 2023. Last, I engage in the transmission of Economics as a professor and supervisor. I have taught six university courses, including two at the masters’ level, and have supervised 9 master theses, 12 research interns in experimental projects and four research assistants. I am also frequently a jury member for master thesis at NOVA SBE.
