Hugo Vicente Miranda is a Principal Investigator and Affiliated Assistant Professor at NOVA Medical School, leading the Dysmetabolism in Brain Diseases (DysBrainD) Laboratory. His research explores the intersection between metabolic dysfunction and neurodegeneration, with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease (PD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). His work has been instrumental in identifying glycation as a pathological trigger of PD, revealing how metabolic alterations contribute to neurodegeneration. During his PhD and postdoctoral training at the lab of Prof. Tiago Outeiro, a recognized leader in PD research, he uncovered the role of Sirtuin 2 in neurodegeneration, developed an enrichment method for a-synuclein in biosamples, and identified post-translational modifications with biomarker potential. Since establishing his independent lab in 2018, he has secured multiple competitive grants, including funding from the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and expanded his research into novel therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic dysfunction, particularly through insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) modulation and carotid body (CB) silencing. His group has developed automated behavioral analysis pipelines and pioneered studies demonstrating how glycation drives a-synuclein pathology, published in high-impact journals such as Brain and npj Parkinson’s Disease. Vicente Miranda has received multiple research awards, including three prizes from the Portuguese Society for Diabetes and the prestigious Great Prize from the same society in 2021. He is an elected member of NOVA Medical School’s General Council, a scientific committee member of the Portuguese Society for Diabetes, and co-coordinator of its Translational Research Group. Internationally, he has been invited to present at key conferences, including the International Diabetes Federation Congress (IDF 2023) and the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI 2023), and has a selected talk at the upcoming Synuclein Meeting 2025. With 30 publications in high-impact journals, over 2,500 citations, and an h-index of 20 (SCOPUS), he is an active contributor to the scientific community, serving as a reviewer for major journals and funding agencies such as Foundation Recherche Alzheimer and EMSTAR (Serbia). His research vision is to bridge mechanistic discoveries with translational applications, advancing innovative therapeutic strategies that address neurodegeneration through metabolic modulation.
