Helena Elias is full-time assistant professor at the sculpture department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, coordinator of the curricular unit of ceramics and coordinator of the tread Research in the making of Arts and Sciences at VICARTE, supervising 3 Artistic research PhD FCT grant holders and leading the EEA Grants funded project ARcTic South: exchanges of Artistic Research (AR). In 2021, she was appointed member of the School board Council of FBAUL and curator of the ceramic sculpture works of the Faculty of Fine Arts. in 2022, she proposed successfully a post-grad in Practices of Artistic Research, under the University of Lisbon PRR EURO programme. As an Erasmus native generation, she has experienced diverse knowledge practices within the European Arts Higher Education System: She holds a bfa(hons) in sculpture -Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon (1999). She obtained a Master in Art at Grays School of Arts, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK (2000) and the PhD in Public art, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Barcelona (2007). For her PhD work she has received, in 2009, the Ignacio de Lecea prize, promoted by the Barcelona Council and University of Barcelona. Between 2011 and 2017, she was an FCT grant holder and developed a post-doctoral project in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Lisbon. On the first triennial, she proposed a course content structure based on the concepts of expanded field of Sculpture, using drawing as a transversal tool to create and implementing performative research into sculpture studio practice classes at FBAUL and FBAUP. On the 2nd triennia, she moved her reflexive practice towards ontological questions, namely the incorporation into theoretical reflection of the relationship between the creation process and the result of artistic practice. As an artist, professor and researcher, she has been articulating teaching, research training and development with art practice, along with the of several events organization and publications of papers and workshops, in conferences proceedings, journals and book chapters. In 2018 Helena has disseminated some of her Post -doctoral work by proposing a artist residence at the IST University Museums, where she developed a dialogue space practice with the contents of the temporary historical exhibition "Teaching Drawing at IST across the 20th century". The encounters that occurred between the historical objects, drawings, books exhibited and the residence art work resulted in two artist books and a set of sculptures, drawings and cyanotype photos. In 2019, she has received Best Practices IST award for the development of the art workshops that embedded her residency art works and the contexts of the exhibition. The Symptoms Book exhibition library of the Faculty of Sciences of UNova, was designed concerning a curatorial approach to the research carried, exposing both processes, misled, stand by and final artefacts, while questioning these embedded placements and overlapping situations. At this venue, a group of meetings entitled Talks: The State of the Arts and Sciences was promoted by the Research in the making of Arts and Sciences line of VICARTE. As invited artistic researcher, recent projects have included the Creative Europe project PASS THE MIC. Decolonising Education through ART and FCT funded Photo Impulse: Measuring the Colonies and Their Bodies, from where she is carrying an arts residence at Museum of Natural History and Science. She is currently the PI of ARcTic South, a project funded by EEA Grants Norway, regarding the exchange of Artistic Research experiences between FBAUL and KHIO (Oslo Academy of Fine Arts). She is also a co-hosted artist researcher of the project Anywhere, created by the Centre of Visual Arts, University of Melbourne and the Parsons School of Art, Media and Technology, after a peer review process by outstanding academic artists. She is member of the artistic research Memory Project.
