PhD candidate in Urbanism at the Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, looking at the production of social infrastructure in Maputo to reflect on equitable and inclusive spatial planning and governance. This research seeks synergies from the global South and Sub-Saharan African contexts and is framed under Spatial Justice and Southern Urbanism theories. As an architect and urbanist specialising in Sustainable Urbanism and Spatial Planning, my research focuses on sustainable and inclusive urban planning and spatial transformation. I use applied methods and tools to study processes and practices of access to urban infrastructures and services and participatory governance co-produced in Mozambique with growing interest in other sub-Saharan contexts. My degree in Architecture and Territorial Planning at the Eduardo Mondlane University, my Master's in Sustainable Urbanism and Spatial Planning at the New University of Lisbon, and my Professional and Research experiences allowed me to develop the ability to read and understand contemporary urban challenges, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as to apply innovative tools in graphic design, mapping and use of advanced digital software to analyse and design solutions. In the research projects I participated in in Mozambique, I had the opportunity to collaborate with academics from various backgrounds, international and local partners ranging from institutional and neighbourhood level actors, and communities (mostly) in peripheral neighbourhoods. From these experiences, I developed an in-depth knowledge of the context and established local contacts, which became instrumental in more recent projects. Since October 2023, I have collaborated as a member of the Research Centre in Architecture, Urbanism and Design- CIAUD, at the Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, Urbanism unit, with the Group of Socio-Territorial, Urban and Local Action Studies – GESTUAL. My collaboration with GESTUAL began in 2018 when I integrated the AFRICA HABITAT - From Habitat Sustainability to Quality of Housing on the urban margins of Luanda and Maputo (http://africahabitat.gestual.fa.ulisboa.pt/pt/), a research project focused on forms of socio-urban planning and housing intervention on urban margins of Maputo and Luanda. I am also part of the Collaborative Urban Laboratory for Land Use Monitoring, Planning and Sustainable Development – LUCO (https://luco.fa.ulisboa.pt/), a research project aiming to establish an Urban Collaborative Lab prototype to support development areas (e.g., sustainable urban planning, climate change awareness, etc) through incorporating and operationalising an Urban Land Use Observatory for monitoring and assessing land use changes, creating and building scientific and technical capacity in Maputo. My broader research interest is in sustainable and inclusive development in the Global South, focusing on socio-spatial aspects of urbanisation, access to infrastructure, urban services and governance.
