Rui Ramos Ferreira e Silva é Professor Associado do Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais e Cerâmica da Universidade de Aveiro. Na sua atividade de investigação tem vindo a dedicar-se à síntese e caracterização de revestimentos obtidos pelas técnicas de deposição química em fase vapor (CVD, "chemical vapor deposition") e de deposição em camada atómica (ALD, "atomic layer deposition"). A síntese CVD permitiu obter uma vasta variedade de nanoestruturas de carbono como os nanotubos de carbono, o grafeno e o diamante, nas suas variedades micro e nanocristalina, visando aplicações nas áreas mecânica, biomédica, eletroquímica e eletrónica. Pela técnica ALD tem vindo a desenvolver filmes ultrafinos de óxidos para sensores e dispositivos com aplicações na área da energia. É igualmente especialista de caracterização mecânica e tribológica de materiais cerâmicos estruturais (ex: nitreto e carboneto de silício). Rui Silva foi coautor de 240 artigos publicados em revistas do SCI (Science Citation Index) e coinventor de 6 patentes. É revisor de 45 revistas internacionais incluídas no SCI. Orientou/coorientou 11 teses de doutoramento (outras 6 em curso) e 60 dissertações de mestrado. Foi responsável por 40 projetos de I&D. O seu atual H-index é de 30 (ISI Web of Science).
