Afonso Eva holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (score: 14/20, 2021) from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, and a master’s degree in Biotechnology (score: 17/20, 2023) from NOVA School of Science and Technology. He started his work-life early by fruit picking during the summer part-time and as a restaurant waiter (LaTrattoria, 2022-2023). He also excels in sports, having won national swimming competitions (4x100m relay, 2013). He also volunteered at an autistic children summer camp as a monitor (2021). Recently, he helped break the "Guinness World Record for the largest computer programming lesson" (2024). His professional career in science started during his master's thesis, working with bacteria pure cultures to develop a sustainable bioprocess for CO2 capture and biomass valorization into value-added products (score: 18/20). This work resulted in an oral presentation at the European Congress on Biotechnology 2024 and a manuscript in preparation. After finishing his master´s degree, Afonso joined the Biomolecular Engineering Lab at NOVA-FCT as a research fellow within the PROTEIOS project (2024- present), working with cephalopod-based proteins. As a result, Afonso co-authored a review paper in this field (DOI: 10.1016/j.mtbio.2025.101644, 2025), presented a poster and a flash talk at PepperSchool 2024 on protein engineering, and was awarded second place in the Young Researchers Contest. Afonso is also part of the Biodiffuse team participating in the HiTech2025 program, exploiting a technology from the lab. Apart from his scientific activities, Afonso is also eager to actively communicate science, participating regularly in Science outreach activities, such as Expo FCT and the European Night of Researchers.
