Joana Roque de Pinho (PhD, Colorado State University, 2009), is an interdisciplinary researcher, with a double training in ecology and the social sciences. Specialized in environmental anthropology, she is a Collaborator at CICS.Nova (Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais), Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH), Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Working at the intersection of ecology, political ecology and the environmental humanities, her research has focused on the lived experiences of and responses to environmental changes among West and East African, and Inner Asian rural communities living in landscapes shaped by biodiversity conservation policies and/or land tenure/use transformations. With a strong focus on pastoralism, she is a pioneer and strongly dedicated to engaging local land users as collaborative researchers, employing participatory (visual) methodologies to co-produce transdisciplinary outputs that engage both academic, public and strategic audiences. As the PI of the FCT-funded Mystical Natures project, she examined the overlooked religious dimensions of environmental transformations occurring in drylands of Mongolia, Kenya, and Mozambique (https://myna-project.cei.iscte-iul.pt/), exploring the role of religious actors and institutions in processes of land changes and/or responses to environmental instability. Additionally, Joana founded and led the COVID-19 in Drylands working group, funded by multiple small and major grants. Comprising both academics at all career stages and non-academically trained dryland residents, the group documents and analyzes local responses to COVID-19 lockdown measures, and the legacies thereof, in sixteen dryland countries (https://converge.colorado.edu/working-groups/covid-19-in-african-asian-and-north-american-drylands/). She was a member of the direction and scientific commission of the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte) at Iscte-IUL (2022-2025). In 2025, she was elected Chair of the IUAES/World Anthropological Union Commission on Nomadic Peoples (https://nomadicpeople.info/), a specialist group dedicated to the study of and advocacy for (formerly) mobile indigenous populations.
