Pedro Costa completed the PhD (2024), MsC (2018) and BsC (2016) in Electrical and Computer Engineering by Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico. He is currently a researcher in the Field of Power Electronics working at INESC-ID. His main research interests include power electronic converters, focusing on control methodologies and topologies. His interest in Power Electronics started in 2014 with the development of an electric powertrain for a Formula Student vehicle, where he designed and developed high-energy density batteries, a battery management system, and SiC MOSFET AC/DC and DC/DC converters. During his MSc, he worked on novel semiconductor materials for high-efficiency and high-power density inverters, proposing new sizing methodologies and experimentally validating an inverter with unprecedented power density and efficiency. During his PhD, he developed a novel Solid-State Transformer topology using high-power density matrix converters for isolated AC/AC, AC/DC, and DC/DC conversion. This involved researching new commutation, modulation, and control methods, as well as designing a SiC MOSFET matrix converter for experimental validation. His research contributed to several projects, including SMARTrafo, HILPEARL, and COST Action PEARL PV. Additionally, he developed a remote laboratory setup for students to control PV inverters and observe grid impact. After completing his PhD, he has been involved in two major projects: ATE – promoting a nationwide laboratory network and designing a state-of-the-art laboratory for E-Mobility, Microgrids, DC Grids, Renewable Energy, and Power Electronics; and SHIFT2DC – leading the work package "DC Solutions Integration: Tools, Methods, and Applications," coordinating 18 entities across Europe while developing novel solutions for DC grids.
