Susana M. M. Lopes received her BSc in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Coimbra in 2004, her MSc in 2007 and her PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2012. In 2013, she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship, having developed research in the Organic Chemistry Group of the Coimbra Chemistry Center at the University of Coimbra and in the University Federal Fluminense (Brazil). Since 2019, Susana M. M. Lopes has been a PhD Researcher at the Coimbra Chemistry Centre (CQC) - Institute of Molecular Sciences (IMS) at the University of Coimbra, developing research in the Organic Chemistry Group. Susana M. M. Lopes has published 47 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, including 4 reviews papers, and 4 chapters in multi-authored books. She has presented 62 communications (oral and poster) in national and international scientific meetings and has published 6 peer-reviewed conference proceedings. She was supervisor/co-supervisor of 17 academic degree dissertations (BSc, MSc, and PhD) and participated as a jury member in 9 academic degrees examinations. She has participated as a team member in 3 funded projects and worked as a collaborator in 1 funded project. Susana M. M. Lopes was awarded two FCT individual grants, one for PhD and one for Post-Doctoral activities, and received an honourable mention for the best PhD thesis in Organic Chemistry (2013). Her current research interests include the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds with potential application in medicinal chemistry, through studies on the reactivity of nitrosoalkenes and azoalkenes and the synthesis of new steroid derivatives. The reactivity of nitrosoalkenes and azoalkenes led to the development of unique corroles containing oxime or hydrazone moieties, which have shown excellent properties as photosensitizers in the photodynamic therapy of cancer. New chiral penta- and hexa-cyclic steroids developed demonstrated high anticancer and neuroprotective potential.
