Pedro Salomé is a dynamic leader at the helm of the Nanofabrication, Optoelectronics, and Energy Applications (NOA) group at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), where he guides a team of approximately 30 researchers dedicated to integrating and scaling nanotechnology concepts in the fields of energy and optoelectronics. In addition to his role as the group leader, Pedro holds esteemed positions that reflect his extensive expertise and contributions to the academic and industrial landscape. At INL he is member of INL’s executive board, moreover, he serves as a guest Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Aveiro, he is board member at Battery Cluster Portugal association, is board member of the Vasco da Gama Energy storage Colab, and he also serves as board member of the Portuguese Materials Society, solidifying his commitment to advancing materials and nanotechnology research in several areas. Pedro’s impressive track record in materials, optoelectronics, nanofabrication, and energy is underlined by two accepted EPO patents and more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. With over 5000 citations according to Scopus (h-index36) and over 6000 citations on Google Scholar (h-index 40), his research has garnered significant attention and recognition within the scientific community. As an adept leader, Pedro has spearheaded several industry-oriented research and development projects, notably including the New generation storage (NGS) project, which secured a consortium of over 50 entities to create a value chain in the battery sector with a budget of ~200 M. Additionally, Pedro’s direct involvement in industry contracts at INL demonstrates his commitment to fostering practical solutions in the energy domain and nano/microfabrication. Pedro’s academic journey began with a Diploma in Physics Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, followed by a Doctoral degree in Applied Physics in 2011. Throughout his academic pursuit, he engaged in short research stays at prestigious institutions, such as the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, Germany, and the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. After his PhD he started a researcher contract at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he was the scientific project manager of an industrial collaboration between the Ångström Solar Center, and Corning Inc. His achievements led to the award of a Marie Curie Individual Intra European Fellowship (IEF) in 2013, which subsequently led him to join the International Iberian nanotechnology laboratory (INL). In recognition of his contributions to the field, Pedro received an FCT Investigator starting grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in 2016, which allowed him to establish an independent research group at INL and in January 2017, he was promoted to the position of group leader, marking another milestone in his flourishing career. Pedro’s commitment to knowledge dissemination and science promotion is evident through his numerous invited talks at conferences, universities, schools, and companies. He is actively engaged in supervising interns, masters, and PhD students, nurturing the next generation of researchers in the domain of renewable energy and nanotechnology. Pedro’s dedication to fostering connections between industry and the research community, along with his passion for renewable energy, makes him a valuable and impactful advocate in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.
