Dr. Raffaella Gozzelino is the Founder of Diáspora Mundi, an international network of highly qualified professionals, committed to advance science-driven development. Diáspora Mundi strategically mobilizes expertise across all scientific domains, with a core mission of strengthening education and capacity building. Diáspora Mundi plays a critical role in fostering sustainable development through targeted knowledge transfer and the promotion of locally relevant, high-impact research and training initiatives. Dr. Raffaella graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Parma, Italy. She obtained her Master of Science (MSc) and European Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, in Cell Biology. She then conducted post-doctoral studies, at the Gulbenkian Institute of Molecular Medicine, Portugal, where then she was appointed as Staff Scientist, before establishing the biomedical research laboratory she directs at NOVA Medical School, NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal. As Invited Professor at the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde, she extends her mentorship to students enrolled in international academic programs, such as the MISTI/MIT-Africa and the Stanford Cardinal Quarter Internship Programs, promoted by Diáspora Mundi to foster a cross-continental academic exchange, support global talent development and strengthen research ecosystems in the Global South. She also serves as the co-Chair of the Canadian DOTCAN Institute, dedicated to advance the Development of Ocean Technical Capacity in partnership with African Nations. Moreover, she is a Member of the Reviewing Panel for Fund Attribution of 13 Governmental Funding Agencies for Research, mainly from the European Union; a Scientific Expert at EEA – the European Environment Agency – and HaDEA – the European Health and Digital Executive Agency; and an Academic Editor of >10 international peer-reviewing scientific journals. Dr. Raffaella published 36 international peer-reviewed scientific articles, authored 2 book chapters, and contributed to the publication of 6 e-books related to her core research areas. Her work has been cited >5,100 times, reflecting its significant impact on the scientific community, and distinguished by several prestigious competitive grants and international prizes. In 2024, she was recognized among the 2% most cited scientists worldwide, according to the Stanford Elsevier Top Scientists List, a distinction she first received in 2022, through the Elsevier Global Ranking of Scientific Impact. As past experiences, Dr. Raffaella has held prominent roles as Director of the International Society for the Study of Iron in Medicine and Biology (BioIron); Scientific Advisor of Thelial Tecnologies S.A.; Rector of the Atlantic Technical University of Cape Verde and Coordinator of the Sea Campus; National Representative of All-Atlantic Blue Schools of Cape Verde; Vice-chancellor of WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) MSc program; Member of the Counselling Council of the Higher Education Regulatory Agency of Cape Verde, Executive Project Coordinator for West Africa by the Parley Foundation for the Ocean Portugal, and international consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO).
