David Miranda Carlos is a civil engineer with extensive expertise in geotechnical engineering, particularly in the application of geosynthetics. He completed his education at the University of Aveiro, earning a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (2016), a master’s degree (2009), and a graduation (2008) in the same field. His doctoral thesis focused on experimental and numerical analysis of geosynthetic-reinforced soil structures, comparing granular and fine soils. His research career began during his master’s studies, where he investigated the use of geosynthetics in reinforcing the salt pans walls of the Aveiro Lagoon, contributing to sustainable construction techniques with minimal environmental impact. His research continued as part of the "ValorSoil" and "GeoProteC" research’s projects developed at Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, examining the use of low-quality soils in reinforced structures and developing sustainable coastal protection technologies using geosynthetics, respectively. After his Ph.D. (May 2016), he worked as a civil engineer (site manager) in several construction companies, where he applied his expertise in real-world construction projects. His role enhances his expertise in project management of public and private works. In 2019, he returned to research, joining the GeoSynergim research project to explore the long-term degradation of geosynthetics under various environmental and mechanical degradation agents. His work involved both laboratory and large-scale field tests, leading to several international publications. Since July 2023, he has been a researcher in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro and at RISCO - Research Center for Risks and Sustainability in Construction, working on the Agenda Transform research project which aims to study the construction of multifunctional forest roads incorporating industrial by-products from the paste and paper industry. Throughout his career, has gained expertise in soil-geosynthetic interaction, geosynthetic durability, and design and numerical modelling of geotechnical structures (slopes, walls, unpaved roads). The experience in carrying out laboratory tests to characterise the properties of construction materials (soils, aggregates, geosynthetics, composites formed by the combination of the previous) is substantial. He has published widely, including two theses, a book chapter, and numerous journal and conference papers. He also actively contributes to knowledge dissemination through conference presentations, article reviews, and collaboration with academic institutions.
