Elena Zagar Galvão obtained her PhD in Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), Portugal, in 2015, with a thesis entitled "Gesture in Simultaneous Interpreting from English into European Portuguese: An Exploratory Study". She has an MA in English Studies from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, USA, where she was a Fulbright grantee and a Teaching Assistant. She also holds a post-graduate diploma in Translation and Terminology from the University of Porto and a degree in translation from the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori, University of Trieste, Italy. She teaches general translation from Portuguese into English to undergraduates and specialised translation in the Master’s programme in Translation and Language Services (MTSL), which has been a member of the European Master's in Translation since 2009. She is the coordinator of MTSL as well as of the Specialisation Course in Conference Interpreting. She served as a member of FLUP's Executve Council for eight years, from 2014 to 2021, and is currently a member of FLUP's Pedagogic Council. She is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and the Associação Portuguesa de Intérpretes de Conferência (APIC). Her research interests lie at the crossroads between multimodal behaviour, especially co-speech gesture, and conference interpreting, viewed as a socio-cognitive embodied professional practice. She has been associate editor for the journal Translation Matters since its creation in 2018. She has reviewed for scientific journals such as Gesture, Cognitive Linguistic Studies, Frontiers in Psychology, Cognitextes, Language and Law, and has co-edited the volume Recent Perspectives on Gesture and Multimodality (2019). She contributed to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Interpreting Studies and published chapters in volumes by Benjamins and Rodopi, as well as scientific articles in journals such as Paralléles.
