Flávio Reis holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2006) from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), where he is Principal Investigator and Leader of the Group "Therapeutics and nutraceuticals for chronic inflammatory disorders" at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR). He is also group leader at the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), a UC biomedical research consortium formed by iCBR and Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC). Flávio Reis is currently the coordinator of the Research Management Office at FMUC and held several other functions and positions, including in the UC General Council, UC Senate, in the FMUC Directive Council, in the Scientific Council of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute and in the Scientific Council of CIBB, both from UC. His scientific interests lie mainly in the field of therapeutic and nutraceutical interventions targeting cardiometabolic and renal diseases, including prediabetes, diabetes and its vascular complications (namely nephropathy), among other parallel interests. He has been working with animal models for more than 25 years and, considering the vast experience in this area, he is linked in various ways to Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS). Actually, he: i) was president of the iCBR Animal Welfare Body (AWB) and is member of two other AWBs; ii) was chair of the organizing committee of the “3rd Nacional Symposium of AWBs: 3Rs in action”, held in Coimbra in 2018; iii) was the coordinator of the animal facility of iCBR; iv) is the coordinator of the Advanced Course on Animal Experimentation of the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences from FMUC; v) is member of the Executive Board of the Portuguese Society of Laboratory Animals Sciences (SPCAL) since 2021; vi) was chair of the organizing committee of the “5th SPCAL Congress: LAS for all”, held in Coimbra in 2024. Beyond preclinical research mainly involving animal models of disease, Flávio Reis has also been involved in multidisciplinary societal projects, developed in a perspective of co-creation with and for the community, involving different stakeholders, including patients, caregivers, entrepreneurs, among others. These projects aim to promote, integrate and support health literacy, namely toward healthy lifestyles. He coordinated and/or participated in about 60 projects, the majority of them with competitive funding and many supported by international agencies (EIT-Health, Erasmus Plus, Excellence Hubs, as examples), with a global amount for his Lab. work of more than 2 million euros. He was/is supervisor of about 130 students, including 4 postdocs, 20 PhD, 55 Master and 17 Degree, and participated in many PhD (47) and Masters (85) theses’ juris. He is (co)author of 175 full-papers published in international peer-reviewed journals, with more than 7,000 citations and an H index of 44, as well as editor of 2 international books and (co)author of 20 book chapters. He is also (co)author of other almost 220 publications (full-papers, proceedings and abstracts) published in international and national journals, as well as (co)author of more than 600 communications (as oral or poster presentation) in scientific meetings and was more than 30 times invited as speaker. He received 61 scientific merit awards. Flávio Reis is member of several national and international scientific societies and is President of the Portuguese Society of Pharmacology, was Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Atherosclerosis and of the Portuguese Society of Hemorrheology and Microcirculation. He is a regular reviewer on evaluation panels for competitive funding in international research agencies (from UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Chile), was reviewer of about 240 full-papers for more than 150 journals and is member of the Editorial Board of some.
