Ricardo Emanuel Silva Carvalho obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho (Portugal) in 2022. His main areas of work were the production of polysaccharides-amphotericin B nanocomplexes for the treatment of leishmaniasis, their chemical and physical characterization, as well as the evaluation of their toxicity and efficacy in vitro and in vivo. On this topic, he published 4 articles in specialized journals, 3 of which as the first author. In the fields of oncology and biomaterials, he has contributed to 13 more articles in specialized journals and 2 book chapters. After concluding the PhD, he worked, for 1 year, in an R&D project at Apillet (Denmark) regarding the use of bacterial cellulose in the pharmaceutical field and, in 2024, he had a short experience as scientist researcher at iLoF, where he was involved in product development and submission of grant applications. As postdoctoral researcher, he was involved in the submission of a dossier to the European Food Safety Authority for the validation of the safety of using bacterial cellulose in food products and more recently, he works in the development of new generation of functional scaffolds for various biomedical applications. Complementary to the research work, he was involved in drafting projects for the authorization of animal use for scientific purposes, organizing international symposia, managing laboratory work, and mentoring Master's students. Throughout this journey, he gained skills in cell culture, in vivo assays (animal handling, drug administration, euthanasia, and organ collection), fluorescence and confocal microscopy, development and characterization (DLS, XRD, FTIR, DSC) of pharmaceutical formulations based on polysaccharides, production of thin films by spin coating, surface modification, data analysis, and technical and scientific writing.
