Catarina is currently immersed in her doctoral journey in the Central Nervous System, Blood and Peripheral Inflammation laboratory headed by Professor Adelaide Fernandes. She started her PhD degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon (FFULisboa) in 2022. Since her master studies, Catarina was focused on exploring how blocking the action of an inflammatory molecule could prevent multiple sclerosis-associated pathogenesis using in vivo models. Afterwards, from 2018 to 2021, Catarina continued the studies as a Research Fellow of the project Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation by Merck Serono to Professor Fernandes. In 2021, she received her PhD grant focused on the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying innate and adaptive immune interactions and their impact on MS progression. Also, she is interested to go a step further and fulfil the gap about the far-reaching effects of viral infections in these interactions and consequent MS progression. This work is being developed using innovative 3D cellular systems derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs). In addition to her research project, Catarina is also member of the iMed.ULisboa PhD Students’ Commission (iPSCs) contributing to the academic community.
