My name is Bruno Cruz Silva Silveira and I have graduated from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto with a bachelor’s in Biology and a master’s in Biological Aquatic Resources, which I completed in 2024 with a final grade of 17/20. During my bachelor’s degree, areas such as zoology and ethology were always what appealed to me the most, but aquaculture gradually became an area of interest for me. In any case, my final year project was about environmental psychology, where I studied the impact of nature interaction/perception on stress levels of university students under the supervision of Doctor Karine Silva of ICBAS. This project led to the publication of an article titled “Promoting Mental Health Through Engagement With Urban Nature: A Successful Pilot Test of The “Liga-te à Terra!” Intervention”, in which I’m a co-author. Later in 2022, I applied for my master’s degree and the following year I became a monitor for two weeks for the Junior University program of the University of Porto, in an activity called “Escreve mensagens secretas com plantas” with children of both the fifth and sixth grade. Towards the end of 2023, I started my master’s thesis at CIIMAR in the NUTRIMU group in a project denominated "Are dietary n-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid levels important for European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in a world facing climate changes?”, under the joint supervision of Doctor Rui Magalhães and Doctor Helena Peres. I initially got to help two PhD students of NUTRIMU and learned the specifics of managing and maintaining a recirculating aquaculture system. Also, throughout my dissertation year, I was able to do pelletized fish diets and executed some key bromatological analyses in ingredients and diets that were helpful to obtain results directly for my thesis. A Portuguese aquafeeds company, SORGAL, collaborated with us by formulating the experimental diets, providing the ingredients and giving important insights to my thesis. In May of 2024, the company presented the results that we had at the time, as a poster, at the International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding (ISFNF 2024) that took place in Mexico. In December of 2024, I presented my thesis and concluded with a final grade of 19/20. In addition, as a result of my thesis, an article is currently being written with the growth trial results that were obtained. Ultimately, a second article is to be produced and will be aimed at the impact of n-3 LC-PUFA dietary content on a temperature challenge. The work developed during my master’s thesis opened the door to work at the NUTRIMU group, and at the beginning of this year I was hired to perform a growth trial with European seabass for an aquafeeds company. Currently, I’m enrolled in a 6-month paid internship by CIIMAR and IEFP (Estágio + Talento) to gain more knowledge and skills in laboratory analyses essential to my scientific career.
