Sofia Corticeiro is a researcher in Environmental Economics and Sustainable Natural Resources Management at the University of Aveiro/CESAM in Portugal. She holds a PhD in Biology and works in the ERA Chair BESIDE project as an expert in forestry. Sofia began her career in forestry in the private sector at RAIZ, the Forest and Paper Research Institute in 2011. Over the past 5 years, she led and participated in more than 10 projects that contribute to improving knowledge and developing new methodologies on forest management (projects FirEProd, BESIDE, CCForBio, FACING FIRE, FoRES, FORADVISE, SUSPIRE, TERRASAFE, TERRASAFE.PT) wildfire risk management (projects FirEProd, FoRES, FORADVISE, FACING FIRE), ecosystem recovery (SUSPIRE, EPYRIS, CCForBio) and desertification due to water scarcity (TERRASAFE, TERRASAFE.PT) or wildfire severity (EPYRIS). Currently she coordinates two national projects: FirEProd and TERRASAFE.PT, and as the institutional coordinator for two European projects – the Soil Mission Project TERRASAFE, to combat desertification, and the European FORADVISE project, focused on forestry advisory. With almost 14 years of experience in forestry, she worked as an expert to produce a policy recommendation for the European Commission on deadwood and fire risk, and more recently she was accepted as an expert by the European Environmental Agency. Sofia’s expertise is further recognized through her consulting roles for the Centro Pinus Association and the Center Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRC). In addition, she coordinates the “Forest Ecosystem Services” microcredential (postgraduation and lifelong training) at the Department of Environment and Planning (University of Aveiro). This program, directed to professionals mainly from the forest sector, focuses on the identification and valorization of ecosystem services through sustainable forest management. As for nominations and management positions, she is member of the Regional Center Committee to Combat Desertification and as co-coordinator of the future research cluster Soil Functions, Agriculture, and Forestry within CESAM.
