I obtained my PhD in Marine Geosciences in 2009 (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; AUTh) and have since been working as a researcher in various research projects in the fields of modelling sediment transport, circulation and coastal processes, evolution and resilience. Postdoctoral work on coupled hydro-, bio- and sediment dynamics in tidal lagoons (Ifremer), coastal circulation and storm surge variability under climate change and operational coastal circulation prognoses (AUTh) and beach morphodynamic modelling (University of Aegean), briefly describe my research path until 2016. As of September 2016, I have been a member of the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA; research area: Coastal and Ocean Dynamics) of the University of Algarve, working as a postdoctoral researcher in the projects EVREST (PTDC/MAREST/1031/2014; http://evrest.cvtavira.pt/) and ENLACE (PTDC/CTA-GFI/28949/2017; https://www.cima.ualg.pt/ENLACE/). In the framework of the former, and in collaboration with the other team members, I had the opportunity to analyse the long-term morphological changes of the Ria Formosa barriers in terms of beach, dune and backbarrier marsh morphological units over the last 60 years, and to use this analysis to formulate an innovative resilience assessment approach, based on the principles of ecological resilience theory. In the context of the latter project, I have been working on integrated beach-dune morphodynamic modelling over distinct temporal scales, coupling the XBeach and Duna process-based models to simulate marine and aeolian processes, respectively. I have recently signed a contract with UAlg-CIMA on Dune Evolution and am leading exploratory project DEVISE (2022.06615.PTDC; https://sites.google.com/view/deviseproject/) that aims to assess subpixel classification methods for dune plant species identification using high-resolution satellite imagery.
