Sara Francisca Ramalhosa Guerreiro is a PhD student in Health Sciences at ICVS, Medical School, University of Minho. She obtained her BSc in Biochemistry at Sciences School, University of Minho in 2016 and her MSc in Health Sciences in the Medical School, University of Minho in 2018. She started her career working on clarifying the role Tau protein in several conditions, such as chronic pain, Alzheimer's disease and stress-induced pathology. To accomplish that, she worked with several mice models lacking (TauKO) and overexpressing (P301L) Tau protein. Next, she focused in the study of movement disorders, more specifically, Machado Joseph disease (MJD), and its possible therapeutic targets through the testing of several therapeutic strategies (NLX-112, citalopram, intermittent fasting) in mice mimicking the disease. Currently, she is focused in comprehending the molecular pathways underlying neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically Down syndrome. Overall, she obtained training in working with mice, such as motor, anxiogenic, cognitive, depressive and drug-preference animal behavior, surgeries, blood collection, intraperitoneal injections and euthanizing. Besides, she also has experience in tissue processing and molecular cellular techniques, such as vibratome and criostate brain and spinal cord slicing, subcellular nuclear fractionation, western blotting, DNA and mRNA extraction, PCR and RT-qPCR analysis, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, she has experience in manual neuronal reconstruction using the Golgi-cox technique and, to complement, in 2017, she received training in the University of Osnabrueck, Germany, in confocal microscopy and semi-automated neuronal reconstruction as well as in working with cellular primary cultures. In the future, she wants to better understand the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of genetic disorders since it allows the selection of more adequate therapeutic targets and, consequently, the development of better compounds. She received 2 travel award for the international workshop organized by European College Neuropsychopharmacology (ENCP), Nice 2018 and for the International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) and the Asian Pacific Society of Neurochemistry (APSN), Honolulu 2022 and 1 oral presentation, in the AD/PD meeting as well as she presented her work in several national and international congresses, and published 1 abstract and has 1 paper as first author and 1 paper as co-author.
