Pedro Ferreira graduated in Biotechnology in 2018 by University of Beira Interior (UBI, Portugal), and completed an M.Sc. in Biotechnology (UBI) in 2021. During his M.Sc., Pedro worked on developing a new method for rapid purification of nucleic acids using carbon nanotubes. He gained experience in both upstream and downstream processes, as well as in techniques such as Circular Dichroism, analytic chromatography, quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), production/growth of microorganisms through fermentation (E. coli DH5alpha), cell culture (hFIB), cell viability assay (MTT), and nucleic acid electrophoresis. Simultaneously with his academic career, Pedro participated in several projects, the most relevant being the group "POSEIDON", where a bioremediation strategy for removal of microplastics from wastewater was envisioned through the use of the microorganism Ideonella sakaiensis. Through the development of this idea the group won several distinctions: Winning project in "Promove - Regiões Fronteiriças", by La Caixa Fundation; Winning project in BISC-E (Biobased Innovation Student Challenge - Portugal); EU-Final 2020 BISC-E (Biobased Innovation Student Challenge - Europe); Finalist project in "Ocean's Calling - powered by Sociedade Ponto Verde". From 2021 to 2022, Pedro worked as a researcher at the Health Sciences Research Center (CICS-UBI) at the University of Beira Interior. During this time, he collaborated with Merck to evaluate new prototypes for nucleic acid purification. The following tasks were carried out: Physicochemical characterization of prototypes; Development of adsorption/desorption screening assays; Nucleic acid purification assays (DNA and RNA); Analytical characterization of target products and process. Currently, Pedro is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, continuing his advancements in RNA purification and delivery. To date, Pedro has contributed to several scientific communications and has published two original papers as the first author.
