Daniela Pinheiro de Sousa Santos is a volunteer researcher at the Environmental Health Microbiology Laboratory in the Institute of Environmental Health (ISAMB) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon (FMUL). She holds a Master’s degree in Microbiology from Instituto Superior Técnico (2024) and a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the Nova School of Science and Technology (2021). Throughout her academic journey, Daniela has actively contributed to the scientific community. She was involved in event organization as a faculty committee member for the XXI National Meeting of Biology Students (2019) and as a member of the executive committee for the symposium "Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together," held at the Egas Moniz School of Health and Science (2023). Additionally, she has participated in various scientific events across multiple disciplines, with a particular focus on antimicrobial resistance, public health, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence in healthcare. Her first internship, in 2019, was at the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy and at the Laboratory of Microbiology at Unidade Local de Saúde do Litoral Alentejano, where she gained experience in tumor diagnostic techniques and microbiological analysis. Since February 2021, she has been a volunteer researcher at the Environmental Health Microbiology Laboratory at the Institute of Environmental Health (ISAMB), where she conducted her bachelor's thesis, “The Role of Siderophores in Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae” (2021). In parallel with her research, from October 2021 to March 2022, she worked at Genevet, a Veterinary Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, where she performed diverse tasks in microbiology, serology, hematology, and biochemistry. In October 2023, in addition to her work at ISAMB, she also joined the Associate Laboratory TERRA. In 2024, Daniela completed her master’s thesis at the Environmental Health Microbiology Laboratory, entitled “Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae Complex: Genetic Determinants of Resistance and Molecular Epidemiology”. Since January 2024, she has also been involved as a volunteer researcher in the European Commission-funded (H2020) project Personalized Prevention for Coronary Heart Disease. Regarding scientific output, she is a co-author of a peer-reviewed article published in an international journal. Notably, the abstract based on her master’s thesis was accepted for an oral presentation at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) 2025 in Vienna. She has also delivered multiple oral presentations and completed an approximately 11-hour online course, "Antimicrobial Resistance – Theory and Method," offered by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Beyond her professional and academic activities, Daniela has contributed her time to a local animal shelter.
