Graça Sofia Nunes holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of the Algarve and a Master’s degree in Marine Ecology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Her Master’s thesis focused on the impacts of climate change on phytoplankton communities in the Ross Sea (Antarctica), using remote sensing techniques. Through this work, she developed strong skills in Python programming, long-term time-series analysis, and processing ocean colour (chlorophyll-a) and environmental datasets, including sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration. She is currently the recipient of a research grant, within which she has been working with satellite data to monitor the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with a particular focus on several Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including Madeira-Tore and the Southwest Alentejo region. This work contributes to the development of a national reference by characterising spatial gradients and temporal variability in key oceanographic parameters. Through this research, she has developed a growing interest and expertise in the North Atlantic system. Her primary research interests remain focused on polar ecosystems, the impacts of climate change, phytoplankton ecology, and the broader effects of anthropogenic pressures on marine environments, alongside a strong commitment to science communication.
