  1. Safety of Yam-Derived (Dioscorea rotundata) Foodstuffs—Chips, Flakes and Flour: Effect of Processing and Post-Processing Conditions. The production of yam-derived (Dioscorea rotundata) foodstuffs is mainly performed by small and medium scale processors that employ old traditional methods. This can lead to differences in quality from processor to processor, and from location to location, with consequent safety concerns. As such, the effects of processing and post-processing phases (i.e., storage, transport, etc.) on the safety o. 2019. 42. Estudos anatómicos e histológicos em folhas de roseira desenvolvidas em diferentes condições de humidade relativa. High relative air humidity (RH > 85%) during growth has a negative impact on postharvest longevity of cut roses, being described a different susceptibility among cultivars. In this study, we evaluated the effect of RH on leaf anatomical and histological characteristics in six genotypes from a cut rose segregating tetraploid population (four sensitive and two with intermediate response to desiccati. 2014. 43. Avaliação do contributo da expressão genética na tolerância à desidratação em Rosa × hybrida cultivada em humidade relativa elevada. Cultivation of cut flowers with high postharvest longevity is of extreme importance for consumer’s satisfaction. A negative water balance is indicated as the most important factor reducing longevity. This problem is more severe in plants grown at high relative air humidity (i.e. RH > 85%) mainly due to a poor stomatal functioning associated to lower abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations, leading to h. 2014. Biostimulants derived from natural products are being used by several strawberry growers to increase productivity and fruit quality. Rocket leaves are widely consumed as a ready-to-eat (RTE) leafy vegetable, valued by its wide range of health promoting phytonutrients, including vitamin C and phenolic compounds. Processing and storage conditions are known to affect quality of RTE rocket leaves, with package atmosphere and low temperature as key factors in quality maintenance throughout processing to consumption. 46. Chitosan as a biocontrol agent against the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). The pine wilt disease (PWD) is caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and poses great environmental and economic challenges. Thus, the development of sustainable techniques for the control of this epidemic disease is of major importance. This work aimed at evaluating if the application of different molecular weight (MW) chitosans as a soil amendment could be used to control the PWD in maritime pine. 2014. Silva, M. Yam is a root crop essential for the lives of hundreds of millions of people in many African, Asian and South American countries. Yam roots are in fact used to produce a variety of food items, including yam flour. The flours are consumed mainly as a source of carbohydrate; however, they also supply several minerals which are essential for good state of health. In this study we report about a syste. 2014. Among the mineral elements required by humans, iron (Fe) is the most common cause of nutritional deficiencies, particularly anaemia. Legume plants are extremely important in the world's diet and they are major sources of mineral nutrients. However, when these plant foods are grown in calcareous soil, their production is severely affected by Fe deficiency chlorosis (IDC), andwhen less Fe is availab. 2013. 2011. 57. Pine wilt disease and the pinewood nematode: a threat to Mediterranean pine forests.. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pinewood nematode (PWN), is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD). It was detected for the first time in Europe in 1999, in declining maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) in Portugal. The PWN has been detected in new pine (P. pinaster) forest areas in the center of the country, in 2008, despite efforts developed by the national forestry and quarantine authorities to. 2011. 58. Population dynamics of bacteria associated with different strains of the pine wood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus after inoculation in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster). For a long time it was thought that Bursaphelenchus xylophilus was the only agent of the pine wilt disease. Recently, it was discovered that there are bacteria associated with the nematodes that contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease, mainly through the release of toxins that promote the death of the pines. Among the species most commonly found, are bacteria belonging to the Bacillus, Pant. 2011. Roriz, Mariana; Santos, Carla; Vasconcelos, Marta W.. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/7640.
